Got one too. What’s funny is this is not even a good photo.
It’s like the misspellings in the phishing emails: it ensures only people who will fall for the trick will respond. If some model messaged you out of the blue, you’re more likely to be suspicious or you feel that you’re super attractive and a model might actually reach out to you. Either way you’re more likely to not bite on the bait.
I’m not even talking about the beauty of the woman in the photo, I just mean it’s a blurry, poorly-lit photo that’s taken at a bad angle.
Maybe that’s to make it seem more “real”? I’m not sure.

Yup. It’s why the scams by phone are so irritating to most of us, as another example. It’s just obvious and a time waster, but by making the scam easily visible to people who have the characteristics to not be vulnerable to them, it weeds out all the false positives the scammers would then have to deal with. They don’t want you, mr. bright eyed and bushy tailed, who is ready to catch them out only after hours of trying to get you to give them the code to your gift cards. That’s a lot of wasted time. They just want granny who will follow every direction.
Oh. And I thought they were just a bunch of idiots to make it so obvious. I would love to read scamming for dummies book tbh if one exists

looks taken from a video. my guess is it’s a random girl who they stole it from.

A lot of people use girl and woman interchangeably without meaning it to be demeaning at all.
I’ve seen women here state that they find it offensive. It is dehumanizing and should be avoided.

Probably a scam since it always links to other places. Chances are it will be a “investment opportunity” or something related.
You join a group of what looks like real people but it actually is just a bunch of bots that say how good some scam product or opportunity is.

It’s a shame people can’t just seek out friends at random for real, but in this day and age it’s obviously a scam.

Blocking doesn’t work since they create new accounts on bunch of different Lemmy instances every time.

I think the issue is the “random” part of it. If I had a back and forth with someone on a gaming or LGBT or political organizing community, and the exchange was pleasant and they wanted to chat more, I wouldn’t be opposed, but if I’ve never interacted with someone and they are essentially spamming any and everyone the same copypasta, yea that’s not someone I want to interact with. Shout out to lemmings that help with Linux too.
