public baths in Japan got me comfortable with being naked and i wholeheartedly agree that there are some cultural activities like saunas that obligate nudity.

and are far more comfortable when nude, anyway.

that’s usually why those activities are done nekkid in the first place.

As a Finn I’d say that being naked in the sauna is a tradition - not a rule. I don’t go gatekeeping on people based on what they wear or not. If someone feels uncomfortable with nudity, then wear a swimsuit. I’d rather have them join in the sauna wearing that than not coming at all.

That sounds like a nice, balanced, accepting kind of attitude.

That commenter returnofthemack44 seems typical of conservatives of late though. Just yesterday I was looking at this bonkers mess of nutjobs on a local facebook page (I know…). Some conservatives screaming blue bloody murder about a local politician. He must have mentioned that he had watched some (outrageously popular right now) show about teenagers getting into trouble online and whatever. Now they’re calling him a pedophile because he endorses underage pornography or something.

It’s just nuts to me that people are so invested in the belief nudity is somehow going to corrupt their innocent child. I mean, all kids are naked under their clothes right? What do people think is going to happen if a child sees someone’s bum or god forbid their cock and balls?

If people aren’t comfortable with nudity that’s absolutely fine, but that doesn’t mean everyone else needs to cater to them.

I disagree. I believe wearing anything in the sauna is unhealthy and unhygienic. Not to mention that it reinforces this idea that nudity is inherently sexual or something to be ashamed of. If you’re uncomfortable with nudity either break out of your comfort zone and try something new with an open mind or stay home.

Nearly all public mixed saunas - even in Finland - require you to wear a swimsuit. It’s mostly among friends and family that people go to the sauna naked when both sexes are present.

Most people (myself included) who go to public saunas go to the nude and single-sex ones instead of the mixed-gender and non-nude ones. If it’s a mixed gender sauna outing with friends and family we just go to a private sauna.

Not a sauna guy, I’m a hot tub guy, but I’d think clothing in the sauna would trap heat and sweat and be less healthy?

Wearing something in the sauna is kind of gross. Like, you put on spare shorts, get them totally drenched in sweat, then take them off and store them in a garbage bag or something?

Edit: Oh, god. I hope they’re not in underwear and just keep wearing that around 🤮
