  • Well, it’s not black and white.

Some relevant politically-charged content can slip through even with a no-politics rule. For instance, I moderate a community on disability which has “No politics” in the rules. But I let Luigi stuff through, despite it leading very quickly to debates on US political choices, because it is relevant and it’s emotionally charged for the people involved. But if any Luigi comments devolved into straight politics (rather than focused on healthcare insurance) I’d kill them.

I think a community can have a no-politics rule and still leave room for stuff that’s relevant to the community. But it depends on the community, what the members want and how the moderators enforce the rules. At the end of the day, it’s up to the moderators to set the tone and make sure things stay the way the community wants them to be.

  • Well okay, maybe I wasn’t clear. I agree with you that you certainly aren’t getting enough nourishment for an entire family - and in fact, even if you have enough food volume for an entire family, this crap wouldn’t count as nourishment anyway. And you’re probably paying this box of goopy shit dollars on the pennies it cost to make.

I was just pointing out that, like most things the agro industry puts on boxes, “family size” has no legal meaning and therefore is technically correct depending on how you interpret it.

Incidentally, another thing that means jack squat on your box of dubious food is “Now with more cheese”. If they started out with zero cheese (and no, the stuff with a cheesy taste used in ultra-processed food isn’t legally cheese) then adding a flake or two of real cheddar makes it technically possible to say “Now with more cheese”.

  • I understand the appeal of “teaching them a lesson”, purely for spiteful reasons. But there are problems with that approach:

    • You can teach a child never to put his hand on the burner by putting his hand on the burner. He’ll learn alright, but he’ll also have a nasty burn. Similarly, you don’t want people to learn the dangers of populism and extreme right by letting the extreme-right populist do stupid shit and wreck their lives.

    • We who didn’t vote for the dangerous populist live in the same country as those who did: even if we wanted to let the dangerous populist hurt them to teach them a lesson, he’ll hurt us too in the process.

    • History always repeat itself: even if everybody learns a hard lesson after Trump is done wrecking the economy - or worse - our children, or our children’s children will invariably elect another Trump some day. So we might as well do our best to limit the damage each time.
