Yeah exactly. I mean it takes some balance and they absolutely need to be sensitive. But it is like this in some professions. Once you put in the effort to put away your lunch, drive somewhere etc, you’re then going to engage. At least talk to people and try to assess the situation. Same for firefighters, paramedics and even some technicians. And it’s the right call in lots of inconspicuous situations. At some point the stop giving a f… and just bother people because the alternative is they’ll occasionally have to return to the same situation several hours later and it’ll usually have become worse in the meantime.

To be fair, it’s often difficult to judge a situation over the phone. Some crazy people sound like regular ones. And even more so in the opposite direction. Normal people might sound crazy in emergency situations. So there isn’t really a reliable way to tell them apart. And they then need to dispatch someone to find out.

Lol. Did the cops handle this well, at least? Did it take them time to judge your age, or did they just laugh and leave?

That is correct. I’ve also observed Lemmy is a lot about commenting on the news. And I wish it was more about hobbies, conversations and interesting stuff. You’re generally better off if you like Linux and AI, which are things I’m interested in and those are some pretty active topics… But I can see how that’s not everyone’s pair of shoes.

My feed looks a lot different. And I’ve been blocking posts with these keywords for some time now, plus I’ve unsubscribed from world news and politics communities… But I have a lot of meme pictures in my feed, tech related stuff, casual talk and general questions, comics, animal pictures, computer hobby stuff… Maybe you’re subscribed to the wrong communities?

Ich hab mal eine Flexikon Podcast Folge über das Thema gehört. Also das ist sicherlich nicht leicht, wenn einer mehr als doppelt so alt ist. Man hat unterschiedliche Interessen, ist in unterschiedlichen Lebenssituationen, es gibt Gefälle in der Beziehung… Und gesellschaftlich ist man damit auch nicht akzeptiert. Also wenn es nicht sowieso eine vorübergehende Phase ist, ist es bestimmt nicht leicht. Aber das sind Beziehungen und Partnerschaft ohnehin nicht…

Ja gut, das geht auch. Denke was ich sagen wollte ist: Dann passiert es halt hinter deinem Rücken. Also ich kenne keine der Beteiligten hier… Aber vielleicht sagst du deiner Tochter noch einmal sehr unmissverständlich, dass du für sie da bist. Also falls du das leisten kannst/willst. Ich weiß halt nicht ob man sich nach so einer Absprache traut etwaige Probleme auf den Tisch zu bringen. Und die Spekulation ist ja, dass die Situation zu Problemen führen wird. Da wäre es für deine Tochter vielleicht wichtig zu wissen/fühlen: auch wenn du ihn nicht da haben möchtest, dass sie trotzdem mit dir reden soll, wenn etwas ist.

Naja, pauschale Ablehnung bringt aber auch nix. Damit stößt du deiner Tochter nur vor den Kopf. Wie wäre es, wenn du dir den Typen mal selber anschaust und dir ein selbst ein Bild von ihm machst? Also rein des Zweckes wegen? Ich denke das hilft mehr irgendwie darauf einzugehen. Ich kann die Ablehnung aber verstehen. Da keinerlei Bedenken zu haben ist ein wenig dumm.

I think Alibaba and Aliexpress are less tightly connected with the Chinese government. They also ship stuff from China, but they aren’t specialized in the cheapest of the cheapest. Plus as far as I know they’re more a marketplace platform. They handle the money and connect you with an individual seller in China. The platforms are a bit less convenient to use. I think it’s a bit like eBay vs Amazon, if you want to compare it to western companies.

Because people like cheap stuff. Need a phone case? Harry Potter merchandise knockoffs, socks, a brush for your arts project? TEMU has that for $0.61, delivered to your door.

And as far as I know it’s sponsored by the Chinese government. They chip in with forced labor camps. And they also invested massively in advertising and making it a thing.

I wouldn’t buy from them. As far as I know the app is also spying on the users etc. But yeah, enough people seem to buy stuff there. I suppose it’s cheap and convenient and people don’t care.

Just read the government is currently also on a VPN banning spree. I guess that list is going to change frequently now, if people continue with watching Youtube, Instagram and Twitter.

My top apps are all shopping apps, discount apps, WhatsApp, ChatGPT, TEMU, video streaming and TikTok is there, too. VPN comes further down along with dating apps and then it gets quite random. Guess in Germany our biggest worry is to save some money when grocery shopping…

But it’s peaked this March, and we’re in constant decline since then. We’re losing a few hundred users each month, not growing.

Most Lemmy users and the developers say they prefer slow growth… I mean you’re right. My point is just, it does look more like active decline. And I’m not sure if that’s healthy.

You’re right. That’s a good thing. At the same time it has a lot more “normal people” than other places on the internet, I frequent.

We will grow organically, or not, and it will be fine.

I think that’s pretty much settled by now. Judging by the stats, the graph has homed in on a steady line of 45k monthly active users. And there hasn’t been any movement for some time now. It’s going to be the “or not” part.

That’s exacly what I’ve been telling for some time now, as well.

I think we should be nice and welcoming and provide a good atmosphere. Maybe a unique (in a good way) community that can’t be found anywhere else. I mean we need something that sets us apart. If we’re just another low-key social media platform that is bad as well, just in a different way, we won’t attract any users.

And we need to offer something useful(?) to (new) users.

Plus we need to solve a few technical issues. The onboarding process needs to be a lot easier. It has to be clicking “Next” a few times and maybe choosing a password. Not learning about instances etc and then you also get to sort through the communities and put in a lot of effort to make it useful.
And I’ve heard admins complain, so there might be a few other issues with performance, reliability and other details.
I also think the UI has to be shiny to attract normal people. And there needs to be constant and visible improvement, maybe useful new features every now and then. So it looks active, and provides some novelty and innovation.
